This document contains general information about the demo software, plus instructions for installing it. You should read (and perhaps print) this document before you run the Installer found on the demo disk.
The demo software is fully functional for 45 days after you install it. When the 45-day demo period has ended, you will no longer be able to launch the demo version of either application. However, if you decide to purchase the shipping version of either application, the files you've created with the demo versions will be usable by the shipping versions — you can create Calendar Files and Contact Files and not lose your work when the demo period is over.
The software included in this demo is provided "as is" and may be distributed freely. Both demo applications allow up to 10 network users to run the software simultaneously.
IMPORTANT: If you are running System 6 on your Macintosh, you will be able to install and use only the Now Up-to-Date demo. The Now Contact software runs only under System 7 or later.
TUTORIAL DOCUMENTS
- - - - - - - - - - - - -
Tutorials for Now Up-to-Date and Now Contact are provided in a file called "Print Me - Demo Tutorials" which is installed in the "Now Software Demos" folder. You can use the separate Tutorials to develop an understanding of the features and functions of Now Up-to-Date and Now Contact. This file is in Common Ground format, meaning that you can open, view, and print it without having the creating application or fonts on your system. While most of the document is readable on screen, you will probably want to print it so that following the Tutorials is easier. Some notes on printing:
• The document is long — 71 pages. As a result of the way that Common Ground spools documents for printing, you will need about 8-10 MB of free space on your hard disk in order to print the entire document. If you don't have this much free space, you can divide the document into smaller page ranges and print them separately. If you want to print only the Now Up-to-Date Tutorial, print pages 1-31; for the Now Contact Tutorial, print pages 32-71 (you may also want to print the Introduction on pages 1-3).
• The document will look best when sent to a printer with a resolution of 300 dpi or higher.
• Because of minor differences between the demo software and the shipping versions, you may notice that some illustrations and instructions don't completely match what you see on your screen. Also, note that when either Tutorial refers to the "Now Up-to-Date™ 2.1" folder or the "Now Contact" folder, these folders are located inside the "Now Software Demos" folder at the root level of your hard disk.
INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
1. Restart your Macintosh with no INITs or extensions running (especially virus protection software).
Under System 7, you can do this by restarting the Macintosh
while holding down the Shift key—this disables all extensions
(you shouldn't see any icons appear on the screen during
startup). If you're running System 6, use a startup utility to
"skip" all INITs, or move all such items outside your System
Folder temporarily and restart.
2. Insert the Now Up-to-Date/Now Contact demo disk into your floppy drive.
The disk window opens to show the Installer and this
document.
3. Double-click the Installer icon.
A "splash screen" appears as the Installer launches. When
launching is complete, the Installer dialog box appears.
The components of Now Up-to-Date and Now Contact are listed
in the window on the left. The checkboxes next to each name
may or may not be selected at first, depending on whether or
not you already have Now Up-to-Date or Now Contact installed.
4. Choose the Destination Volume from the pop-up menu.
Any hard disk, whether it's directly connected to your
Macintosh or a remote file server, can be selected.
5. To learn more about a component of the demo software, position the pointer over the component's name and read the information displayed on the right.
You'll see a description of the component, the amount of RAM
it requires, the amount of disk space it will occupy, and
whether or not any component is already installed on the
Destination Volume.
6. Select or deselect component checkboxes as desired.
Select the checkboxes for components that you want to
install. When the checkbox for a component is selected and the
component is already installed, the Installer checks the
version of the installed copy and updates it if necessary. If no
update is necessary, the Installer leaves the component alone.
Deselect the checkbox for any component that you don't want
to install. Note that if the Installer has found any version of
that component already installed, deselecting its checkbox
will cause the currently-installed component to be removed
(this is indicated by a Trash can icon which appears next to
the component's name).
NOTE: If you want to use the Public Categories feature of Now
Up-to-Date to share calendar information on your network, you
need to install the Public Event Server software onto at least
one Macintosh on your network. The Public Event Server
software can be installed on a network user's machine as well
as onto a server; if you're installing onto a server, you may
want to select only the Public Event Server checkbox for
installation. In general, try to avoid having too many Public
Event Server Macintoshes set up on your network, as this can
cause confusion.
7. Click "Install" or "Update" to begin installation.
The button at the bottom right of the Installer dialog box will
read "Install" if you're installing the demo software for the
first time on the selected volume, or "Update" if the Installer
has found any of the components already installed on the disk.
The Installer displays a progress indicator as it works. When
the process is complete, a dialog box appears indicating that
installation was successful and asks if you want to continue
using the Installer, or quit.
8. Click "Quit."
A message appears indicating that the installation won't take
effect until you restart.
NOTE: If you want to install the Now Contact software onto
additional mounted volumes, you can also click "Continue" at
this step, then repeat steps 4 through 7.
9. Restart your Macintosh.
If you installed Now Up-to-Date's Public Event Server
software, a dialog box appears at startup that prompts you to
name your Public Event Server. You can give it the default
name of "Public Event Server" by simply clicking "OK," or you
can type in a different name first and then click "OK." Now
Up-to-Date lets you customize a Public Event Server's name in
order to distinguish it from others on the network.
Once your Macintosh has restarted, you can begin using the
demo software. See the next section for details on where the
software is installed on your hard disk.
NOTE: If you installed the Public Event Server software, open
the Chooser and make sure that AppleTalk is active before
starting to use Public Categories.
Remember that you can get a formal and systematic introduction to the features and functions of the demo software by printing and using the "Print Me - Demo Tutorials" document that the Installer placed in the "Now Software Demos" folder on your hard disk.
At the end of the installation process, the Now Up-to-Date/Now Contact demo software is located on your hard disk as follows:
• The Control Panels folder contains the Reminder and QuickContact control panels.
• The Preferences folder contains a "Now Up-to-Date Prefs" folder, which contains Now Up-to-Date Preferences and Reminder Prefs; also in the Preferences folder is a "Now Contact™ Prefs" folder, which contains Now Contact™ Prefs and QuickContact Preferences.
• The root level of your hard disk contains a folder called "Now Software Demos." Inside this folder is the "Print Me - Demo Tutorials" file, the "READ ME BEFORE INSTALLING!" file, and two folders: "Now Up-to-Date™ 2.1" and "Now Contact™". Inside the "Now Up-to-Date™ 2.1" folder you'll find the Now Up-to-Date application, the Sample Calendar file (for use in the Now Up-to-Date Tutorial) and a "Read Me - Addendum" file that contains any corrections or notes about the software. Inside the "Now Contact™" folder you'll find the Now Contact application, a Sample Contact File (for use in the Now Contact Tutorial), a Templates folder for use in Now Contact's printing functions and a "Read Me - Now Contact" file containing any late-breaking news about the software.
